Circuit des Gorges

Notre CONSEIL :  En juillet-août essayez de partir assez tôt le matin pour éviter la chaleur et la circulation; la route étant souvant étroite de nombreux ralentissements sont prévisibles. Le chemin menant au belvédère de Mayreste est très rocailleux et difficile surtout s'il est humide. Ne tournez surtout pas à droite à votre première arrivée à La Palud, la route serait en sens interdit après 8 km. Si vous souhaitez parcourir les tunnels au Point Sublime, prévoyez une lampe de poche.Débuter ce parcours depuis Moustiers, direction "Castellane-Gorges, La route traverse une foret domaniale et fournit ensuite de superbes vues sur le lac de Sainte Croix. A l'entrée des Gorges, quittez la voiture pour admirer d'un coté le début du lac et de l'autre les Gorges du Verdon en partie inondées par le lac.
La route s'accroche dans les gorges pour atteindre le col de l'Olivier et son parking pour les marcheurs (sentier du pêcheur), un peu plus loin vous atteignez le parking de Mayreste, un chemin piétonnier dans les rochers vous conduit (15mn) à un très beau belvédère.

Our TIP :  In July-August try to leave quite early in the morning to avoid the heat and the traffic; the road being often narrow many slowdowns are foreseeable. The path leading to the belvedere of Mayreste is very rocky and difficult especially if it is wet. Above all, do not turn right on your first arrival at La Palud, the road would be in the wrong direction after 8 km. If you want to go through the tunnels at Point Sublime, bring a flashlight. Start this route from Moustiers, direction "Castellane-Gorges, The road crosses a national forest and then provides superb views of the lake of Sainte Croix. At the entrance to the Gorges, leave the car to admire the beginning of the lake on one side and the Gorges du Verdon partly flooded by the lake on the other.
The road hangs in the gorges to reach the Col de l'Olivier and its parking lot for walkers (fisherman's path), a little further you reach the parking lot of Mayreste, a pedestrian path in the rocks leads you (15mn) at a very beautiful belvedere.

La route s'élève maintenant jusqu'à atteindre La Palud, traversez tout droit le village et après un km suivez la route des crètes qui est en partie en sens unique. Après quelques kms vous allez rejoindre plusieurs belvedères splendides qui bordent la route. Le plus beau se situe à près de 1300 m de hauteur ! Le paysage reste grandiose avec une perspective sur le canyon de l'Artuby jusqu'au chalet Martel départ du sentier le plus renommé. En longeant le canyon la route rejoint La Palud, y suivre la direction de Castellane. Au point Sublime garez vous sur le parking devant le restaurant si vous souhaitez faire une marche pédestre d'un demi-heure jusqu'à la rivière. Sinon continuez sur quelques centaines de mètres et prendre avant le tunnel la route de droite jusqu'au petit parking surplombant le Verdon. De la un chemin vous conduit au lit du Verdon et à l'entrée des tunnels du sentier Martel.

The road now rises until you reach La Palud, go straight through the village and after one km follow the Route des Crètes which is partly one-way. After a few kms you will reach several splendid viewpoints along the road. The most beautiful is almost 1300 m high! The landscape remains grandiose with a view of the Artuby canyon up to the Martel chalet, the start of the most renowned trail. Along the canyon the road joins La Palud, follow the direction of Castellane. At Sublime point, park in the car park in front of the restaurant if you want to take a half-hour walk to the river. Otherwise, continue for a few hundred meters and take the road on the right before the tunnel to the small car park overlooking the Verdon.

En continuant la route vers Castellane vous trouverez après la clue de Carejuan un parking avec espace pique-nique au bord de l'eau. Un peu plus loin "Pont de soleil" vous permet de traverser la rivière et de vous diriger vers Trigance, village typique avec un magnifique château. la route rejoint la D71 qui vous mène aux balcons de la Mescla, très hauts balcons sur la boucle du Verdon, boutique-café-snack sur place. En continuant vous traversez le canyon de l'Artuby sur un pont impressionnant servant de lieu de saut à l'élastique...
A partir des Cavaliers la corniche sublime prend tout son sens et vous offre des vues "accrochées" sur les gorges. Avant Aiguines quelques parkings permettent de s'arrrèter pour jouir de perspectives sur la sortie des Gorges et sur le lac. Aiguines est un sympathique village qui mérite une pause pour visiter les artisans et potiers locaux. La route descend ensuite rapidement vers le lac et retraverse le Verdon à son débouché. Vous pourrez y louer un canoë ou un bateau élecctrique pour remonter sur environ un kilomètre les gorges. Votre ciruit se termine à Moustiers où vous pourrez flaner dans ce charmant village avec ses magasins de faience ou monter jusqu'à la chapelle pour admirer en contre-bas le village.

Continuing the road towards Castellane you will find after the clue of Carejuan a car park with picnic area at the edge of the water. A little further on, "Pont de soleil" allows you to cross the river and head towards Trigance, a typical village with a magnificent castle. the road joins the D71 which takes you to the balconies of the Mescla, very high balconies on the loop of the Verdon, shop-café-snack on site. Continuing you cross the Artuby canyon on an impressive bridge serving as a place for bungee jumping...
From Les Cavaliers, the sublime ledge takes on its full meaning and offers you "hanging" views of the gorges. Before Aiguines, there are a few car parks where you can stop to enjoy views of the exit from the Gorges and the lake. Aiguines is a friendly village that deserves a break to visit the local artisans and potters. The road then descends rapidly towards the lake and recrosses the Verdon at its mouth. You can rent a canoe or an electric boat there to go up the gorges for about a kilometer. Your circuit ends in Moustiers where you can stroll through this charming village with its earthenware shops or climb up to the chapel to admire the village below.
